About the Side Hustle Coalition

Our Story

Built for Independents, by an Independent

The Side Hustle Coalition exists because independent workers deserve more than “figure it out yourself.”

A Lifetime of Hustling — and One Big Realization

I've been a side hustler for as long as I can remember. My first gig was at twelve years old — mowing lawns and tending my grandmother's vegetable garden on her four-acre property up on Lake Simcoe. She convinced her property manager to hire me at five dollars an hour, and I thought I'd won the lottery.

That feeling of earning something on my own terms — that lit the flame.

By high school, my buddy Owen and I were building power supplies for rotating disco lights and renting them out to DJs and bands. We made about $600 before the equipment broke down. Seven months in business — and we were proud.

Then came the towing business at Blue Mountain. My friend and I tried to rescue stuck cars during a snowstorm using my dad's Suburban. We drove straight into a ditch, nearly rolled the car, and had to pay $150 for a tow truck to pull us out. My father laughed for weeks.

I got seriously sick in my early twenties. Spent years in and out of the hospital. When I finally started to recover, my grandfather bought me an Apple II computer — and that changed everything. I taught myself spreadsheets, enrolled at Ryerson for engineering, and started a bookkeeping business with my friend David out of my parents' basement. One client in fourteen months. $200 total revenue. But I learned something invaluable: I needed to learn how to sell.

That lesson took me from Radio Shack — where my car door literally fell off in the parking lot — to the mortgage industry, where I helped my uncle acquire and run a brokerage. I organized a $30-million art exhibition called Collage 2003 across four floors of a 60,000-square-foot building in downtown Toronto. I worked in food manufacturing, grocery chain engineering, and spent almost ten years optimizing logistics at Purolator. I helped run my family's tool and fastener business, traveling to trade shows across Asia and North America.

Through it all — the wins, the failures, the health battles, the career pivots — I kept coming back to the same observation:

The talented people I met weren't failing because they lacked ability. They were failing because they lacked access.

The same tools, systems, benefits, and infrastructure that companies take for granted simply don't exist for independent workers. And no amount of individual hustle can replace what a collective can build together.

That's why I created the Side Hustle Coalition.

Our Mission

To give independent workers the collective infrastructure to build sustainable careers — without sacrificing the independence that brought them here.

We believe independence should be a foundation for collaboration, not a sentence to isolation. The Coalition exists to close the gap between what solo workers can do alone and what they could accomplish together.

Our Values

The Principles Behind Everything We Build

When we disagree about a decision, we come back to these.

Independence First

You choose how and when you participate. No lock-in, no centralized control. Your work, your decisions, your business. The Coalition supports your autonomy — it never replaces it.

Collective Leverage

Together, independents access what none could alone — better tools, shared benefits, stronger negotiating power. The network gets more valuable with every member who joins.

Technology That Serves People

Every tool in our ecosystem is designed to reduce friction, not create dependency. Technology works for you, not the other way around. If a tool adds complexity, we remove it.

Progress Over Perfection

Start with one step. Build gradually. The strongest systems are built intentionally, not all at once. We'd rather you take one small action today than wait for the perfect moment that never comes.

How It Works Together

Three Pillars. One Ecosystem.

Each pillar serves a distinct purpose. Together, they form the practical foundation for sustainable independent work.
